Ultimate Dall Sheep Hunts

YUKON TERRITORIES

Today’s premier sheep hunting destination for trophy rams is the Yukon. We have access to two distinctly different sheep areas but both have one thing in common – a high rate of success on rams due to an extremely high population of sheep. According to a biologist in Whitehorse, YT the 2009, 2010, and 2011 sheep seasons will be the best in a long time due to a high lamb/ewe ratio following the harsh winters in 1999 and 2000. There will be a tremendous number of 9 to 10 year old rams coming of age in addition to the already awesome number of older rams already on the mountain. Here are the two areas where we offer hunts in the Yukon:

A.  Devilhole Camps – This area is arguably the best trophy dall ram area in all of North America. They have had seasons where they averaged 40” and they have taken a number of B&C record book rams over the years. The terrain is also one of the most diverse in that we have ridden horses to the rams in some areas, and hiked hard to find rams in others. The diverse terrain means we can offer a sheep hunt to almost anyone who truly wants to work hard and within their limitations to get a trophy dall sheep. This is however THE PREMIER destination for hunters wishing to hunt for a book dall ram. These hunting packages are $19,500 all inclusive for a ten day sheep hunting package.

B.  Kluane Camps – This area has a phenomenal sheep population and has always had a high rate of success. This is a huge guide use concession that offers us the ability to customize a hunt to fit our client’s needs. We have the physically demanding horseback/backpack camps and then we even have a couple of camps where we can ride up to almost parallel with the sheep in some places. By working with us we can customize a sheep hunt to fit your needs personally and these camps have always been one of our top producers for rams. While the Kluane area does not produce the record book rams that the Devilhole area does it does not have quite the same price tag either. Twelve day horseback hunts are $16,800 all inclusive.

Bottom line on why you should book a hunt in the Yukon – you will see a lot more rams, no resident hunters, and have a 25% higher rate of success when compared to Alaska. Serious sheep hunters are staying in the Yukon or NWT for their dall rams right now!

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

The NWT is where you go for the Cadillac of all sheep hunts – the helicopter hunt. This is the perfect sheep hunt for the guy who does not want to ride horses or backpack the extreme sheep country. Our clients go in by helicopter and are dropped off in spike camps with their guides on the top of the mountain. By starting on top you can glass longer and stay above the rams. This hunt has been done by clients in their 70’s and even 80’s – with a near perfect rate of success on mature rams. In recent years sheep in excess of 40” have been taken and they average almost 38” on their rams year in and year out. The hunts are all inclusive in cost at $18,500 and cover everything from pick up to delivery from Ft. Simpson, NWT airport. Call our office for details on this superb dall sheep hunting experience.

ALASKA

We will be the first to admit that we have pulled the majority of our sheep hunters out of Alaska. This is due to the number of resident hunters and the growing pressure they are placing on the Alaskan sheep populations. Combined with a growing wolf predation situation and the fact that most of Alaska’s sheep units are going to a draw to control sheep harvest it is becoming harder and harder to book quality sheep hunts in this state. HOWEVER we understand that not everyone can afford the premier sheep hunts in the Yukon and NWT so we have worked hard with our sheep hunting guides in Alaska to develop a reliable quality sheep hunt out of a backpack camp. Our clients are typically flown to a remote lake and then backpack a full day to their spike camp. (sometimes two days depending on the location of the sheep) By backpack hunting the cost to operate this hunt is reduced by eliminating horses and helicopters. These hunts are priced at $10,900 plus license, tag, and in some cases an air charter to the back country. Call our office for details on our Alaskan sheep hunts, dates, and availability.
