This is probably the most famous brown bear hunting destination of them all and Kodiak is still a top destination of hunters seeking record books skull sizes. Genetically the largest brown bear skulls come from Kodiak Island and the B&C record books confirm that to be true. Kodiak Island still produces 10’ squared bears but the skulls are often 26” or larger making it the place to hunt if you want to make a run at the record books. Our hunters fly into a remote cabin camp where they are based for the duration of their fifteen day Kodiak Experience!
Kodiak Island is not easy – It starts at sea level and goes straight up. Hunters who come here should be in excellent physical condition and prepared to work extremely hard for their bear. The island has an excellent population of bears and hunters will normally see 20-30 bears during the course of a 15 day hunt. However seeing bears does not mean you can stalk them all. Patience is the key to being successful on a spot and stalk brown bear hunt. Watch them from a distance and wait until they settle down into one area for a while or bed down for a nap! Then make your move – the statement brown bear hunting is 90% boredom and 10% sheer terror and excitement has never been more true that on Kodiak Island.
Make sure you have quality optics because you will be looking through them all day and every day. Bring a good rifle that is stainless or rust resistant. Be proficient as a shot and make sure you have good equipment. The salt water is rough on gear and the rugged nature of Kodiak Island will test both you and your equipment.
